Our Story

The journey from a spice collector to a spice exporter

Formed in 1970

Samagi Spice Exports (Pvt) Ltd was conceived as a brainchild of entrepreneur Mr Baragama Arachchige Abeyrathne. The company registered as a sole proprietorship with only one employee. Born and bred in the hamlet of Deiyandara, in the Matara district of Sri Lanka, Mr Abeyrathne grew up influenced by the spice trade which was abundantly grown in the areas. The business started with just one small collecting centre, which traded spices to areas like Ambalangoda and Colombo.

Growing By the year 2000, Mr Abeyrathne was joined by his older son Janaka Abeyrathne. There was some improvement from the 30 years being in business with additional employees totalling 10 individuals who were involved in the operations of the business. With the influence of the new generation, Samagi Spice Exports (Pvt) Ltd was able to accumulate seven additional collecting centres by 2008.

They were also the main supplier of Pure Ceylon Cinnamon to several prominent and well-established companies in Sri Lanka. In 2010 the company was joined by the younger son Thilina Abeyrathne and together caused the family enterprise to further flourish.

Taking Ceylon Cinnamon To The World

Since its inception, the vision was to emerge from the Sri Lankan market and venture into international waters where the strong demand for Sri Lankan authentic cinnamon was no secret. Working around the clock with so much passion for the company, the Abeyrathne family was able to break through into the export market, gaining access to Mexico, Peru, USA and the Latin Americas. This achievement brought the company closer to its vision of operating as a primary exporting company, taking the indigenous Sri Lankan Pure Cinnamon to international platforms.

In 2018, the first warehouse and operational office were established in Houston, USA, where operations are underway in the aim of becoming the primary spice supplier to the American market.

  • 52% of market share in the Sri Lankan spice exports
  • 10 collecting centres and seven processing facilities
  • Average of 35,000 kilos of Pure Ceylon Cinnamon on a daily basis, processed and packed within two days, sealing in the goodness.
  • Latest Technology in Preserving Goodness

The company was also quick to adopt new technology of the 21st Century and move away from traditional, time-consuming, methods of processing, which also carried a high risk of contamination.
